(aka Carter's Ford)

Carter's StoreJohn Carter established a store (pictured at right) in the 1870s/1880s by this ford at the junction of Curl Creek and the Caney River. The Sequoyah post office was run from this location from 1888 until 1896. Sequoyah was the Indian name of George Guess, the inventor of the Cherokee alphabet, and the word translates to mean "shut in or away".
